Barbara Guidetti Avej
Born in 1961 in Basel, Barbara Guidetti Avej graduated in 1987 from HEAD – Geneva (formerly ESAV), under the name Barbara Baenziger, in the class of Shérif Defraoui.

Between 1987 and 1989 she exhibited, both in group and solo shows, in various galleries and museums in Switzerland, before leaving with her life partner and their growing family on a long journey around the world (South Africa, India, China, Central Asia, France, Italy).

She then trained in philosophy, Jungian psychotherapy, yoga and Chinese medicine. Since returning to Switzerland in 2011, Barbara has pursued spiritual and artistic research in parallel, and teaches meditation.

During her art studies, she was drawn to the German painting scene (Kiefer, Richter, Baselitz), but most of all to American Abstract Expressionism (Pollock, Rothko, De Kooning).

She experiences her work essentially as a process, a performance, a ritual. Figuration is quickly replaced by a form of painting that seeks neither representation nor a preconceived result, but allows traces and materialized energy to emerge in the very act of painting.

Her painting is performative, accompanied by a modified state of consciousness, as if guided by an invisible force seeking to become visible through ebb and flow, play of colours, gestures, shadows and light that clash and then harmonize — like a dance, a rhythm that moves through the body before settling on the canvas.
